Chapter 20

I'd filled up on so much coffee, I only managed to eat half the pancakes and a sliver of hash browns. Fortunately for me, my breakfast date was one of those tall, broad-shouldered men with a bottomless appetite. Jackson managed to clear both plates while I finished off a third cup of coffee.

Jackson walked me to the jeep and gave me a kiss. "I'm afraid I drank too much coffee. It cleared my head, but now I feel as if I could leave my jeep here and run all the way home."

"You should probably take the jeep. Butternut Crest gets kind of dicey at the blind curve." He kissed my forehead and waited for me to get into my car before strolling over to his own car. My phone buzzed with a text as I pushed the key into the ignition.

It was a picture of a dozen or so pumpkins in varying sizes, shapes and colors. Emily's text followed the photo. "Pumpkin carving in an hour at the farm. Lana's coming too. I made cheddar corn muffins with freshly churned butter."

The muffins that would normally excite me made me groan. "I'll be there but I just ate, so I'll probably forgo the delicious muffins," I texted back.

"Great. See you soon."

I headed back through Firefly Junction at a much more sluggish pace than an hour earlier. Churches had let out and brunches were over, so more people were milling about the town. One person in particular caught my attention. Megan Rowe was dressed in jeans and sneakers as she walked in a hurried pace past the deli. She glanced back behind her more than once, making it seem that she was worried about being followed.

I slowed my jeep and watched as she turned the corner to a smaller street. If she had just been strolling along, possibly stopping in at the deli or another shop, I wouldn't have thought much of it, but she was acting oddly. I parked the jeep, crossed to the opposite side of the street and walked casually past the small corner she had turned around. The strangeness continued.

A man with a greasy comb over, gray trousers and dark sunglasses was talking to Megan. She continued to look anxiously around before handing the man an envelope. He handed her a large envelope as well. Just as urgently, she spun around and returned to the main sidewalk. I casually turned back toward my jeep and climbed inside.

This time Megan did stop in the deli, but her acquaintance with the dark sunglasses stepped onto the sidewalk and strolled, hands in trouser pockets, to a black SUV. He climbed inside and pulled away from the curb. I decided to follow him.

I instantly learned tailgating the stranger was not going to be easy. He turned off onto some of the lesser traveled roads, and with traffic already light, it was not easy to slink behind unnoticed in my jeep. He pulled into a small parking lot that was a communal space for a cluster of office buildings, mostly dentists and other medical specialists.
